EARLY PAINTING Oil wash on raw canvas

Ivory Billed Woodpeckers ©1990, 48" x 36" oil wash on raw canvas.

A painting that was completed soon after graduating from art school. I was still timid with paint and diluted the pigment to be a wash. After reading about the extinction of birds and visiting a back room is at the Field Museum, I was able to inspect drawers and drawers of birds. Ivory Billed Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker (20" in length with a 30" wingspan) and is extinct. Other woodpeckers are in critical situations. At this time I painted many extinct birds as a way to learn to handle paint.

This painting is not stretched and is rolled securely in a sturdy tube. It is very easy to have the canvas stretched on a custom stretcher.
